Take “half the clothes and double the money”While doubling your budget may not be possible, reducing your luggage is achievable. Carrying a lighter load makes navigating through crowded airports and public transport easier and reduces the chances of losing items. Even on longer trips, packing quick-drying clothes and decanting liquids can help you manage with less stuff. So, pack light and bring only the essentials, even if you plan to check your bag. Introducing the first in a series of blog posts focusing on the art of packing. This initial post looks at how to choose the perfect bag for your travel adventures, and offers practical advice drawn from my personal journeys and years of packing mishaps. When it comes to travelling, the right luggage can make all the difference. As a seasoned traveller, I understand that different types of luggage suit different trips. Unfortunately, one size does not fit all when it comes to travel bags. The duration, purpose, and destination of my travels play a crucial role in determining the most suitable type of luggage to bring along. The benefits of traveling carry-on are undeniable.
It saves time at the airport by avoiding checked luggage lines and waiting to collect baggage at your destination, saves money on baggage fees and minimises the risk of lost or delayed luggage. Complying with carry-on restrictions encourages me to pack efficiently and not overpack with items “just in case”. A lighter load to carry is then easier to navigate through crowded airports and on public transport, and you’re less likely to lose something when you don’t have too much with you. Even on extended trips, you can manage with less stuff; pack quick drying clothes as there will always be opportunities to do laundry during the trip, and decant all those liquids. If I can, whether I am travelling for 3 days or 3 months, I will always travel with a carry-on sized bag. This January I spent 3 weeks in East Africa, travelling through Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda on an Overland Truck. This was the first time I have joined a trip like this and it far exceeded my expectations. I travelled with the UK based company Oasis Overland, who I would highly recommend and definitely travel with again. The driver and guide were both lovely and incredibly competent. Often, the Kenyan driver, had worked for Oasis for 20 years and had been driving and maintaining this particular truck, named Chui (Swahili for Leopard), for over 12 years. Lorain was from Zimbabwe and has been working for Oasis for a couple of years but had spent many years prior to that guiding overland groups in South Africa and Zimbabwe. The truck was well worn but comfortable and well equipped. Often had done a lot of upgrades and modifications that included multiple "above seat" charging stations. But, my two favourite things about the truck were the seating arrangement which was very communal and made chatting as a group and playing games very easy and the canvas sides that could be rolled up. This truly transformed the journeys, instead of looking through glass as the scenery went by we could lean out and experience it more directly, waving and interacting with people on the way. As December whizzes by and 2024 fast approaches, I want to discuss the ideal timing for planning and booking a trip. Gone are the days when you could effortlessly seize a last-minute bargain for flights or accommodations, especially if you have fixed dates and a specific destination in mind. The optimal timeframe for most trips is around 8-9 months before your intended travel date. However, if you plan to visit a popular destination during peak travel seasons, it's advisable to start even earlier. Delaying your planning until the last minute often results in higher prices and limited options.

Whether you're embarking on a quick weekend getaway or planning an extended journey, the art of packing can be both exciting and overwhelming. But don’t panic, as I have put together a guide to help you effortlessly navigate the world of packing and ensure a hassle-free travel experience. First things first, let's talk about the great carry-on versus checked bag dilemma. This is a decision that often leaves travellers scratching their heads, wondering what items are best kept by their side and what can afford to be stowed away. The answer lies in striking the perfect balance between convenience and necessity. Your carry-on is your travel companion, a guardian of your must-haves and essentials. Think about those items you simply cannot afford to lose or wait for at baggage claim. From travel documents and medication to your favourite neck pillow, electronics, and a change of clothes, your carry-on should hold everything you need for the first 24 hours of your trip. This ensures that even if fate throws a curveball, you'll still have essential items within arm's reach. On the other hand, your checked bag offers ample space for those bulkier, less time-sensitive items. This is where you can pack extra clothes, shoes, and toiletries. Remember to pack smartly, making use of packing cubes and compression bags to maximise space and keep your belongings organised. Of course, aside from the logistics of packing, there's also the crucial consideration of your destination and planned activities. Are you off to a tropical paradise, a bustling city, or a serene countryside retreat? Each location brings its own unique set of packing challenges and opportunities. Think about the climate and weather at your destination. Pack light and breathable fabrics for scorching summer days, or bundle up with cozy layers for frosty winter adventures. Don't forget to research local customs and dress codes to ensure you're appropriately attired for any cultural excursions. Furthermore, tailor your packing list to the activities you have planned. If you're embarking on hiking expeditions, pack sturdy footwear, moisture-wicking clothing, and all the necessary gear for a safe and comfortable trek. For beach getaways, remember to pack sunscreen, swimwear, and beach essentials like hats and towels. So embark on this journey with me, as I unlock the secrets of smart packing and equip you with the tools and knowledge to become a packing pro. Bon voyage! Now your trip is booked, and all the essential details are organised, it's crucial to ensure that you have all the necessary elements in place for a smooth and hassle-free travel experience. To help you stay organised and fully prepared, I've compiled a comprehensive checklist of important things to remember before you leave for your adventure.
