 DETAILED ITINERARY

Nepal - hosted small group, women-only tour
14 days / 13 nights

Picture

Day 1: Kathmandu (1400m)

Meals Included: Welcome dinner

Namaste, welcome to Kathmandu!

Kathmandu, the largest city of Nepal, is the political as well as the cultural capital of the country. Like any big city, Kathmandu has seen rapid expansion in the last decade, but despite the hustle and bustle so typical of metropolitan cities, its people remain as refreshingly friendly as ever.

Meet your leader and fellow travellers at a 6 pm welcome meeting and after, we'll head out together
for a delightful dinner at a nearby Nepali restaurant and get our first taste of Nepal with local delicacies such as Momo and Dal Bhat whilst enjoying a traditional dance performance.

Day 2: Kathmandu (1400m)

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch (at cooking-class)

This morning, we head to Kapan Nunnery – Khachoe Ghakyil Ling, a Buddhist nunnery located on the outskirts of Kathmandu. The nunnery's mission is to provide women who want to dedicate their lives to the Buddha's teachings with a safe haven for their study and practice.
This unique and exclusive experience will teach us about their daily lives and how they challenge patriarchal Buddhist traditions.

After visiting the nunnery, we’ll take a cooking class at Seven Women – an organisation supported by The Intrepid Foundation that socially and economically empowers marginalised women in Nepal through various education programs, skills training, and income generation. While the initiative started with just seven participants, to date over 5,000 women have now been educated, trained, and employed here. In the cooking class, we learn how to make delicious Nepali dishes and have the chance to swap stories with these women who have overcome discrimination to turn their lives around.

After the class we’ll have the opportunity to tuck into our freshly made creations for lunch.

Other than a private yoga class late afternoon, the remainder of the day is at your leisure.

Day 3: Kathmandu (1400m)

Meals Included: Breakfast, lunch (local street food tasting)

After breakfast, we'll explore Kathmandu Durbar Square, where we'll stop at a brick building known as Kumari Ghar.
Visitors and worshippers congregate daily in the courtyard beneath the balcony to catch a glimpse of Nepal’s most prominent living Hindu goddess – Kumari. A fascinating Hindu ritual, there are several Kumari in Nepal who are chosen early in childhood and remain goddesses until they begin menstruating or lose blood from an injury (when they revert back to mortal status and re-enter society).

Then we'll explore the old streets behind that extend from Kathmandu Durbar Square as we taste the local food in small stalls and hole-in-the-wall eateries.

Afterwards we'll drive to Kirtipur – visited by only a handful of tourists, this is a gem of history and culture. We'll visit Chilancho Temple, Bagh Bhairav Temple, and Uma Maheshwar Temple. We'll walk down the old alleys and observe the local way of life as the locals chat, spin wool or knit.

Maybe you will treat yourself to a traditional Nau pedicure performed by local Newari women – Napits. The role these women play, to clean and purify the body, is a respected part of the local culture, and to receive treatment is an opportunity not just to gain an insight into this tradition but also to connect.

Day 4: Pokhara (822m)

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch (at momo cooking class)

This morning, we head to the Kathmandu airport and fly west to Pokhara. The 25-minute flight offers views of the Himalaya range to the north (on a clear day).
Be sure to have your camera ready to snap the glory of the surrounding Himalayan peaks in the morning light.

Pokhara is set in a beautiful valley overlooked by the Annapurnas and the fishtail-shaped Machhapuchhre, one of the most distinctive of the Himalayan peaks.
Arriving in Pokhara, we'll take a short orientation walk before heading to a Tibetan Refugee Camp for a special Momo cooking class with the residents of the Refugee Camp.

We then drive to Pema Tsa'l Sakya Monastic Institute for a meditation session with a monk.

In the afternoon, we can visit ‘Yes Helping Hands Handicrafts’ manufacturing site, where people living with disabilities are given skills training in traditional handloom weaving, dyeing, and knitting.

Day 5: Birethanti (1025m) - Ulleri (1960m)
Meals included: Breakfast

Let the trekking begin!

Today we transfer by private vehicle to Birethanti where we'll get the chance to meet our all female hiking crew – made up of assistant guides and porters. We will each have our own porter to help us on the trek.

In the afternoon, they’ll lead us into a world of friendly villagers, terraced fields, alpine meadows, and rhododendron forest set before a backdrop of snow-clad peaks. We can expect the first part of this trek to be relatively flat and easy-going. However, after we reach Tikhedhunga, be prepared to get your blood pumping with a climb up hundreds of stone steps to Ulleri. Don’t worry, we’ll have beautiful views of the villages, forests, and mountains to keep us distracted on the journey.

Today's trek, Birethanti to Ulleri, is ~ 5 hours walking.

Day 6: Ghorepani (2860m)

Ghorepani sits at a cool 2,860 meters above sea level, so we can expect to get our heart rates pumping on today’s exciting uphill climb. We'll pass traditional homes and teahouses along a path that winds up and down hills before rewarding us with views of Annapurna South half-way along today’s trek.

As our climb continues, we’ll meander through thicker wooded areas, filled with towering bamboo plants and trees in bloom. Then, we'll venture beyond Banthanti (2,300m) through a moss-coated jungle before reaching Nangathanti (2,520m) where we’ll continue our journey to Ghorepani and enjoy some well-deserved rest in the evening.

Trek to Ghorepani (approximately 4 – 5 hours’ walk)

Day 7: Ghorepani - Poonhill (3200m) - Tadapani (2630m)

Sunrise enthusiasts rejoice – today, we'll rise early for a pre-dawn hike up Poon Hill to enjoy the sunrise over Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna Range.

We'll then head back and tuck into breakfast at our tea house accommodation before lacing up our boots for today’s trek to Tadapani. Expect more magnificent views to frame your walking trail today as we continue north along the ridgeline with the Annapurna Ranges stretching along the east and west.

We’ll follow a forested ridge that serves up views of the ranges in both directions. We descend along a muddy slope before reaching a small settlement and beautiful forested gorge.

From here, we head toward the mountain village of Tadapani where you’ll get a chance to relax, wander the local township and put your feet up for the evening.

Sunrise hike to Poonhill ~ 1.5 hours walk
Trekt to Tadapani ~ 6 hours walk

Day 8: Ghandruk (1940m)

Wake up with relief knowing that today's trail is shorter and easier than we’ve become accustomed to over the last few days. We’ll take in the sunrise from Tadapani and then hike to Ghandruk village today. The route from Tadapani to Ghandruk is tranquil and bursting with colorful wildflowers in spring.

After reaching Ghandruk, we’ll explore this fascinating mountain village with a guided village tour, take in the mesmerizing views, and get acquainted with the ethnic Gurung culture here.

Trek to Ghandruk ~ 4-5 hours walk
Picture

Day 9: Shyauli Bazaar (1220m) - Pokhara (822m)

After a leisurely breakfast this morning, we will embark on a short trek down to Shyauli Bazaar, where we’ll be transferred to Pokhara by a private vehicle.

We'll take a boat ride across Phew Lake to visit Tal Barahi temple in the lake's center.

After lunch, we'll visit the International Mountain Museum.

This evening is all ours to relax and admire the lakeside scenery.

Trek to Shyauli ~ 3 hours walk

Day 10: Madi Valley

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast this morning, we hit the road for Madi Valley. When we arrive at our homestay, the local women, dressed in their traditional Magar attire, will be ready to greet and welcome us into their homes. This homestay project provides sustainable income and encourages the communities living on the fringes of Chitwan National Park to conserve the wilderness and wildlife around them. This evening, the women will teach us to cook local dishes, which we’ll enjoy dinner as a group. This is a great opportunity to get to know the women better and chat with them about their lives and work. After dinner, we’ll be treated to a cultural performance by the women, where they’ll demonstrate one of the oldest ethnic dance forms of the Magar community – the Maruni Naach.

Day 11: Chitwan National Park

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, you can take a stroll around the village, then hop on a bicycle to Baikunthe Taal which is a popular small lake with historical value.

After returning to the village, we head to Chitwan National Park – considered one of Asia's best national parks.

After arriving at our Jungle accommodation and checking in, we
visit Tharu Village, where we’ll learn about the lifestyles of the native Tharu people and observe a traditional cooking demonstration before sharing dinner together.

Picture

Day 12: Chitwan National Park

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is all about exploring Chitwan National Park and discovering the wildlife that lies within.

After breakfast, we leave the lodge for an early morning dugout canoe adventure on the Rapti River. Our guide will help us spot marsh mugger crocodiles along with the various birds that inhabit the riverbanks.

After lunch, we hop aboard a jeep and take a 4-hour safari drive through the Park, looking out for a variety of wild species ranging from the majestic one–horned rhinoceros, to honey badgers, Bengal foxes, civets, mongooses.

Tiger sightings are rare these days, but the magnificent creatures inhabit the park, so it’s not to be ruled out.

In the evening, we can enjoy dinner with our group and relax at our accommodation’s bar while discussing the day’s sightings or listening to the song of the jungle.

Day 13: Kathmandu

Meals Included: Breakfast, Farewell Dinner

If you’re avid wildlife lovers, we have an optional early-morning birdwatching safari available today – a worthwhile addition to our trip.

After breakfast, we’ll take a private transfer back to the bustling capital of Kathmandu. In the afternoon, we'll visit a local NGO called Days for Girls Nepal. Here, we'll learn from a team of local women about their work to provide menstrual care and education and their mission to eliminate the Chhaupadi practice in Nepal. They campaign against Chhaupadi, a tradition in western Nepal, which prohibits Hindu women and girls from participating in normal family activities while menstruating, as they are considered impure.

Tonight, we head to Village Café for our group dinner. The Village Café allows women who would otherwise be based at home to earn a living cooking traditional Newari cuisine, using ingredients they’ve grown in their own fields.

General Information

  • You’ll need a high level of fitness for the trekking portion of this trip, as you will be walking for between five to seven hours a day some days. You’ll ascend and descend uneven ancient stone steps for much of the trek, so it’s recommended you use hiking poles (which you can purchase in Nepal). This will be my training goal / incentive for 2025!!
  • While you’re trekking, you’ll be provided with a duffel bag that a female porter will carry. Your porter can carry up to 8 kg per traveller and any other luggage can be left in Pokhara to collect at the end of the trek.
  • The reality of road travel in Nepal is that things always take longer than you expect. Some roads will be bumpy, dusty or even unexpectedly blocked requiring reroutes and plenty of patience – but that’s all part of the adventure.
  • Accommodation in some destinations may vary in standard and facilities and on occasion hot water may be limited. In more remote parts of Nepal, eating at the hotel restaurant may be practical rather than heading out for optional meals.
  • This tour is a partnership with Intrepid Travel. A certified B Corporation company and all round purveyor of "good trips only".
