Planning a trip is an exciting endeavour, but it's essential to budget and manage your finances wisely to make the most of your journey. From estimating your expenses & using ATMs wisely to dividing your money and carrying emergency funds, smart money management is key to enjoying your holiday to the fullest. By following these tips, you can navigate currency exchange, payment methods, and budgeting effectively, allowing you to focus on creating unforgettable memories during your getaway. Estimating Expenses:Research the cost of living in your intended destinations to set a realistic budget. e.g. Western European countries tend to be more expensive than Eastern European destinations, but Portugal is generally cheaper than Spain.
Websites like Global Price are very helpful for this research. Determine your daily budget by accounting for accommodation, meals, transportation, activities, tips, and any other miscellaneous expenses. Preparing for your upcoming trip involves more than just picking out clothes and booking accommodations. One essential aspect of travel planning is ensuring you have all the necessary toiletries and first aid kit essentials, to make your journey smooth and comfortable. In this blog post, I will explore these elements to help you pack efficiently. Don’t forget that when it comes to cabin / carry-on toiletries, there are specific guidelines to follow: all containers of liquids, non-solid food, and personal items like aerosols and gels must be 100 ml (100 g) or less and fit into a single clear, resealable plastic bag that is no more than 1L in capacity. Each passenger is permitted one such bag. ToiletriesYou can save a lot of space and weight in your luggage by minimizing toiletries and eliminating certain items altogether. So, decant everything into smaller containers and plan to buy it locally if you run out.
Take “half the clothes and double the money”While doubling your budget may not be possible, reducing your luggage is achievable. Carrying a lighter load makes navigating through crowded airports and public transport easier and reduces the chances of losing items. Even on longer trips, packing quick-drying clothes and decanting liquids can help you manage with less stuff. So, pack light and bring only the essentials, even if you plan to check your bag. My General Packing “Rules”: My 10 essential guidelines for choosing what to pack are:
Introducing the first in a series of blog posts focusing on the art of packing. This initial post looks at how to choose the perfect bag for your travel adventures, and offers practical advice drawn from my personal journeys and years of packing mishaps. When it comes to travelling, the right luggage can make all the difference. As a seasoned traveller, I understand that different types of luggage suit different trips. Unfortunately, one size does not fit all when it comes to travel bags. The duration, purpose, and destination of my travels play a crucial role in determining the most suitable type of luggage to bring along. The benefits of traveling carry-on are undeniable.
It saves time at the airport by avoiding checked luggage lines and waiting to collect baggage at your destination, saves money on baggage fees and minimises the risk of lost or delayed luggage. Complying with carry-on restrictions encourages me to pack efficiently and not overpack with items “just in case”. A lighter load to carry is then easier to navigate through crowded airports and on public transport, and you’re less likely to lose something when you don’t have too much with you. Even on extended trips, you can manage with less stuff; pack quick drying clothes as there will always be opportunities to do laundry during the trip, and decant all those liquids. If I can, whether I am travelling for 3 days or 3 months, I will always travel with a carry-on sized bag. This January I spent 3 weeks in East Africa, travelling through Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda on an Overland Truck. This was the first time I have joined a trip like this and it far exceeded my expectations. I travelled with the UK based company Oasis Overland, who I would highly recommend and definitely travel with again. The driver and guide were both lovely and incredibly competent. Often, the Kenyan driver, had worked for Oasis for 20 years and had been driving and maintaining this particular truck, named Chui (Swahili for Leopard), for over 12 years. Lorain was from Zimbabwe and has been working for Oasis for a couple of years but had spent many years prior to that guiding overland groups in South Africa and Zimbabwe. The truck was well worn but comfortable and well equipped. Often had done a lot of upgrades and modifications that included multiple "above seat" charging stations. But, my two favourite things about the truck were the seating arrangement which was very communal and made chatting as a group and playing games very easy and the canvas sides that could be rolled up. This truly transformed the journeys, instead of looking through glass as the scenery went by we could lean out and experience it more directly, waving and interacting with people on the way. As December whizzes by and 2024 fast approaches, I want to discuss the ideal timing for planning and booking a trip. Gone are the days when you could effortlessly seize a last-minute bargain for flights or accommodations, especially if you have fixed dates and a specific destination in mind. The optimal timeframe for most trips is around 8-9 months before your intended travel date. However, if you plan to visit a popular destination during peak travel seasons, it's advisable to start even earlier. Delaying your planning until the last minute often results in higher prices and limited options.
