Packing Part 4: A Guide on How to Pack Smartly

When it comes to travelling, packing efficiently can make a world of difference. Here are some top tips to ensure you pack smartly for your next adventure:

1. Start with Not Overpacking

The golden rule of packing is to avoid overpacking.
  • Choose versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits.
  • Plan to do laundry during your trip, so choose quick-drying clothing items.
  • Never put anything in your bag “just in case”.

See my previous post for a detailed discussion on choosing the right clothes and tech items to pack.

2. Decant your Liquids

  • Transferring your liquids into travel-sized containers will significantly reduce the weight and space they take up in your luggage.
  • Plan to buy it locally if you run out.
  • Ensure all your liquids are properly separated into a clear airline-compliant bag to speed up the security process. A 1L Ziploc bag is usually good enough; if not, you can place the entire bag into the airport's provided "compliant" bag.

For a more detailed look at what to pack for toiletries, see my previous post.

3. Only Take What You Need

I'll say it again: Resist the urge to pack "just in case" items.
Stick to the essentials and items you know you'll use.
Remember, you can always purchase items at your destination if needed.

4. Leave Valuables at Home

Avoid bringing valuables, whether they hold monetary or sentimental value.
This minimises risks and helps you maintain a low profile whilst travelling.
Do without unnecessary gadgets and electronics.
And, don't bring anything prohibited in your destination e.g. Drones in Barbados or e-cigarettes in Mexico

5. Utilize Packing Cubes (and maybe Compression Bags)

When it comes to efficient packing, using packing cubes can be a game-changers.
But not all packing cubes are made equal.
Invest in a good set that is well made and can stand up to being full and take some strain on the zip.
The way to get the most out of packing cubes is fill them to the max and then use them to compress your clothes.

You can use packing cubes to:

1. Organize by Category: Use different cubes for specific categories like tops, bottoms, underwear, and accessories.

2. Maximize Space: Roll or fold your clothes neatly before placing them inside the cubes and then compressing the items within the cube. (Full disclosure, I'm a folder not a roller!)

3. Easy Access: Packing cubes allow you to easily access specific items without having to rummage through your entire luggage. Simply pull out the cube you need without disturbing the rest of your belongings.

4. Separate Clean and Dirty Clothes: Use separate cubes to keep your clean clothes separate from dirty laundry during your trip.

Compression Bags:

Compression bags can be beneficial for maximizing space and reducing the bulk of larger items; however, for travel their practicality is limited.
  • Unless you have access to a vacuum cleaner, packing cubes are a more useful choice.
  • Travel compression bags that do not require a vacuum are ineffective, even after a short period of time.
  • Vacuum compression bags can be handy for your outbound travel, but they aren't practical for day-to-day use or the return journey. (WARNING: packing with a vacuum bag may result in struggling to fit everything back into your luggage without a vacuum for the return trip!)
  • It's important not to view compression bags as a way to overpack (see last point!)
  • If you do use them, be careful, as the weight can accumulate rapidly.
  • I've given a variety of travel compression bags a shot, hopeful for a solution, but they are never better than a good packing cube.

6. Packing Your Main Bag Efficiently

By strategically placing items in different layers of your bag, utilising packing cubes, and making use of additional compartments, you can pack efficiently and ensure that your belongings are well-organised and protected during your travels.
  • Check Airline Restrictions: Be aware of your airline's baggage restrictions regarding weight, dimensions, and prohibited items to avoid any extra fees or issues at the airport.
  • Label Your Bag: Attach a luggage tag with your contact information on both the inside and outside of your bag.
  • Use a TSA approved lock to securely close your bag. (TSA LOCK® is a global security system which allows passengers to lock their luggage, while permitting security authorities to inspect them without damage. )
  • Utilise side pockets for items you may need quick access to such as travel documents, chargers, or small electronics
  • Fill Empty Spaces: Use the gaps between items by filling them with smaller essentials like scarves, gloves, or electronic chargers. This helps to distribute weight evenly and prevents items from shifting during travel.
  • Compression Straps: If your luggage has compression straps, make use of them to secure items in place and prevent movement while in transit.
  • Leave Room for Souvenirs: If you plan on shopping during your trip, leave some extra space in your bag or consider bringing a collapsible bag for additional items on your return journey
  • Pack in layers
Packing Layers:
Bottom Layer

Place heavier items like shoes, toiletry bags, and bulky items at the bottom of your suitcase.
Stuff your shoes with other items
Pack shoes them into shoe bags, to keep them separate from your clothes and to prevent any dirt or odours from transferring.
Protect toiletries in a plastic bag, in case of spills.
Middle Layer:
Place packing cubes in the middle of the bag, and if you have any fragile items then pack them in the centre of a packing cube
Fill the packing cubes to capacity to make the most of the space available.
Top Layer:
Place more delicate items and electronics towards the top of your bag where they are easily accessible.

7. Pack Essentials in Carry-On

Ensure you've packed a small grab bag in your carry-on with all your in-flight must-haves. This little bag can easily go into the seat pocket or under the seat, allowing you to stow your carry-on away in the overhead compartment without needing to access it during the flight.

Here are the essentials to consider putting in your carry-on bag. Think about what you really need for the next few days should your checked bag not arrive at your destination.
  • Passport (should have 6 months validity from your return date)
  • Vaccine information (e.g. covid, yellow fever etc.)
  • Travel visa, as needed for your destination
  • Nexus card
  • Drivers licence
  • Health / Travel Insurance policy
  • Itinerary, ticket and reservation information
  • credit card, debit card and currency
  • Phone and charger
  • Laptop and charger
  • Books / e-reader (including quidebooks)
  • Travel adapter
  • Headphones
  • Personal medication
  • Overnight wash bag - maximum 100ml per item / total 1L
  • Sunglasses / glasses / contact lenses
  • Inflatable neck pillow / eye mask (for long haul travel)
  • Travel scarf (doubles as a blanket and sarong)
  • Swimwear
  • Pen
  • Refillable Water Bottle
  • Luggage Lock (TSA approved)
  • A digital & / or paper copy of all important documents, including your passport, travel insurance, credit card emergency contact phone number and emergency contact details

Depending on your airline and flight duration, you may also want to pack some food to keep you going until you arrive at your destination.

So, remember to pack light, use packing cubes efficiently, and organise your belongings strategically in your bag.

Happy Packing and safe travels!
